Sierra Club Project Renewal
The Sierra Club Board of Directors, in May 2007 and with the assistance of LaPiana Associates, conducted a survey of our leadership to gauge our effectiveness. The survey revealed that work needs to be done to re-evaluate and restructure how Sierra Club operates. The Organizational Change Steering Committee was created for this purpose. Committee members were chosen for their Club-wide commitment to progress and for being good thinkers. This process is open to your participation!

Laura Hoehn Laura has been the Club’s General Counsel since 2002. Prior to working for the Club, she volunteered in a variety of elected and appointed leadership positions at all levels of its volunteer structure including the Board of Directors, Finance Committee, Litigation Committee, Wildlands Committee, Montana Chapter, Headwaters Group, and Northern Plains Regional Conservation Committee. Starting in the Gateway to the West - home of the 2006 World Champion St. Louis Cardinals - she now lives in Bozeman, Montana where she enjoys exploring the mountains, rivers, and valleys of the Northern Rockies with her husband, Chris.
Allison Chin (OAGC, 1/04; FGC and OEGC Board Appointments, 5/07; OCSC, 6/07) Allison lives in Stanford, CA, and works for a local biotech developing therapeutics for cancer and other diseases. She has been a member since 1982, but became an activist in the Club through Inner City Outings (ICO) in 1988. She served on the executive committees for ICO at both the local and national levels. She has served on the TGC, OAGC (chair from 2004 to 2007), Nominating Committee, and was elected to the Board of Directors in 2007.
Bob Bingaman Originally from west Texas, Bob Bingaman has served Sierra Club National Field Director, for the past 14 years, a position responsible for overseeing the Sierra Club field system and field staff. Bingaman has over 25 years of grassroots organizing experience. Bingaman currently sits on the Environmental Support Center (ESC) board of directors and executive committee. Bingaman serves as Vice-Chair to the Board of Directors of Green Corps, an organization dedicated to training the next generation of professional environmental organizers. Bingaman also served for nearly a decade as Co-Chair of the Utah Wilderness Coalition, a coalition dedicated to preserving and protecting 9 million acres of Utah's wilderness. Finally, Bingaman is active in his community (Takoma Park, MD) where he manages a Babe Ruth baseball team and served on the Board of Directors and is a former Commissioner of the Takoma Park Babe Ruth Baseball League.
Bob Morris Robert Emmett Morris lived in the US, Thailand, Turkey, Italy, Germany and Japan pursuing a career in business before returning to his home town of Washington DC. He now indulges full time his lifelong passions for adventure, ecology, activism and writing. He has run successful retail, marketing and management operations, organized low income residents of Southwest Baltimore to reduce murder rates and predatory lending practices, been elected and served as DC Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner to promote re-development of H St. N. E. and built local, regional and national grassroots initiatives in Sierra Club to save wild places and combat climate change. Bob has written numerous essays and articles on movement building. He worked on the Sierra Summit Direction Setting process and now serves on the CCL Excom and is chair of the Youth Integration Committee. His book, The Owl and the Oak: The Climate Change Novel has just been published and is available through booksellers and on Amazon.com.
Gene Coan, who lives in Palo Alto, California, received his BA from the University of California at Santa Barbara in June 1964, and his PhD from Stanford University in April 1969.
He taught invertebrate zoology in the summer of 1969, and worked later that year as a museum preparator at the University of California in Berkeley. He was Director of Political Activity of Zero Population Growth from November 1969 to September 1970. Since then, he has worked for the Sierra Club in various capacities, currently as Senior Advisor to the Executive Director.
He holds research associations with the California Academy of Sciences, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, and the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. He was president of the Western Society of Malacologists in 1970-1971, and its editor from 1974 to 1979. He was president of the American Malacological Society from 1996 to 1997. He has been coeditor of the international scientific journal Malacologia from July 1988 to the present.
He is the author of many papers in malacology, including systematic reviews of the various families and genera. He is also the senior author with Paul Valentich Scott and Frank Bernard of the 764 pp. text Bivalve Seashells of Western North America.
He has also specialized on the history of malacology, with biographical papers, lists of taxa and types, and collations. James G. Cooper, pioneer western naturalist is a book-length treatment published by the University of Idaho in 1981. On-line publications include a 740 pp. key to papers about the history of malacology and malacologists.
Susan Heitman (co-chair of CEGC) Susan lives in Los Angeles, California where she is head of public relations for a large private research university. A Sierra Club member since 1985, she was active in National Outings and was founding chair of the Outdoor Activities Governance Committee; she also chaired the Board's Election Reform Task Force and has served on the Nominating Committee.
Marilyn Wall marilyn.wall@sierraclub.org; 513-226-9235 Marilyn has been a Sierra Club volunteer for over 25 years and a full time volunteer for 13 years. She has worked on stopping sewer overflows, cleaning up steel mill pollution, chemical plant emissions, protecting rivers and endangered species, environmental justice, stopping sprawl, taken legal action against polluters, lobbied legislators, organized community members and Sierra Club volunteers, helped political campaigns, attracted media on our issues. She has worked to confront corporate power through campaigns, bringing affected community members to shareholder meetings to speak directly to the CEO. She has served as Chapter Chair, Chapter Conservation Chair, and Group Conservation Chair, Political Chair, and Excom member and was elected to the Board of Directors in 2006.
